Section I: Manitoba winters depicted with quartal and quintal colour chords, using open voicings, over a diatonic foundation with modal mixture. Occasionally bitonal. Pitch center in D, broadly.
Section II: built on a descending octatonic bass pattern with ostinato inner voices; this section represents gradual erosion. Pitch center in Bb/B, depending on how you look at it.
Section III: several statements of the French folk melody "À la claire fontaine" set against an ostinato. This melody is used as a reference to the French population of Manitoba, and is reharmonized several times using quartal and quintal harmony, and Fauxbourdon. dissonant Interjections act as a callback to similar interjections, earlier.
Section IV: ostinato pattern from [III] drops a beat each bar, eventually reducing itself to a single note, while melody attempts to recapitulate fragmentary "themes" from [I]. Piece has fully decayed; resolution to original pitch center (D) is not fully achieved.
